Blog Post #40: To Love
whimsy
noun
playfully quaint or fanciful behavior or humor.
For all the students going into finals this week or next, I just want to take a moment to say,
Amidst the glare of the white library lights, the eye bags, the pulling of hair, and the hours spent hunching over your laptop,
Don’t forget to live.
To get hit with a snowball or two, and hit your friend back in return,
To take the time to sit with your friends in the library, even though you know you’d be more productive alone.
Because that’s where life lies- somewhere in between the snowflakes falling on your glasses, the extra twenty minutes (or forty) laughing in the dining hall with your friends, and the shedding of tears over The Art of Racing in the Rain on a Sunday night.
Backs bent against the biting wind, just to sip Mexican Coca-Cola over bean tacos and nibble warm chocolate cookies.
I go the extra mile to live just so I know what kind of life I want to pour into my music- the product, a Saturday night in the rehearsal room with the huge windows and an amber-colored piano that lets me ring those great, deep, singing bells of Rachmoninoff.
This time won’t last forever, so why not go out with a smile, tell your friends you love them and sit through the entire jazz concert just because the lamps and the music make you feel warm inside.
This week I’m experimenting with a new idea- follow what you love in order to find yourself, because the path you thought you wanted doesn’t necessarily need to be the only road you take, and why not try everything?
